Parashat Re'eh

See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse. The blessing is for keeping the commandments, the curse for turning away, and both will be proclaimed from Mount Gerizim and Mount Eival. Once in the land, the people are to worship only at the place God chooses and to destroy the shrines of other gods. A prophet who works signs but preaches other gods is a test and must not be followed. The portion repeats the dietary laws, sets out the tithes, cancels debts every seventh year, commands open-handed generosity to the poor, frees the Hebrew servant with gifts, and closes with the three pilgrimage festivals of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot.
