Parashat Vayeshev

Jacob favors Joseph and gives him a striped coat. Joseph tells his brothers two dreams in which they bow to him, and their hatred grows. Sent to check on them, he is thrown into a pit and sold to a caravan bound for Egypt. The brothers dip his coat in goat's blood, and Jacob mourns. The story pauses for Judah and Tamar, whose determination secures the line that leads to King David. In Egypt, Joseph runs Potiphar's house until Potiphar's wife accuses him falsely. In prison he interprets the dreams of Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker, and is forgotten.
