Parashat Vaetchanan

Moses tells the people how he pleaded to cross into the land and was refused; he may only see it from the mountain. He urges them to keep the laws without adding or subtracting, to remember the day they stood at Sinai, and to teach their children. He sets aside three cities of refuge east of the Jordan. Then he repeats the Ten Commandments, with small differences from the version in Exodus, and gives the six words that became the central statement of Jewish faith: Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love God with all your heart, soul and might. Teach these words, bind them on your hand, write them on your doorposts.
