Parashat Shemot

A new king arises who does not know Joseph. The Israelites are enslaved, and Pharaoh orders the newborn boys drowned. Two midwives refuse. A Levite mother hides her baby in a basket on the Nile, where Pharaoh's daughter finds him and names him Moses. Grown, Moses kills an Egyptian who is beating a Hebrew and flees to Midian, where he marries Tzipporah and tends sheep. At a bush that burns without being consumed, God calls him to bring the people out. Moses resists five times. He returns to Egypt with Aaron, and Pharaoh answers by making the work harder.
