Summary
God rewards Pinchas with a covenant of peace and the priesthood for his descendants. A second census counts the new generation: 601,730, and not one of the men counted at Sinai remains except Caleb and Joshua. The land will be divided by lot according to these numbers. The five daughters of Tzelofchad ask to inherit their father's share, since he had no sons, and God rules in their favor. Moses is told to go up the mountain and see the land he will not enter, and asks God to appoint a successor. Joshua is chosen. The portion closes with the daily, Shabbat, new moon and festival offerings.
