What Hosea is about
Hosea, the first of the twelve minor prophets, spoke to the northern kingdom of Israel in its last years. He describes the bond between God and Israel as a marriage strained by unfaithfulness and held together by love. The haftarah for Shabbat Shuvah comes from its closing chapter.
Opening verse
דְּבַר־יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר הָיָה אֶל־הוֹשֵׁעַ בֶּן־בְּאֵרִי בִּימֵי עֻזִּיָּה יוֹתָם אָחָז יְחִזְקִיָּה מַלְכֵי יְהוּדָה וּבִימֵי יָרָבְעָם בֶּן־יוֹאָשׁ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
