What Daniel is about
Daniel tells of Jewish exiles at the court of Babylon: the fiery furnace, the writing on the wall and the lions' den. Its second half is a series of visions of the empires to come. About half of the book is written in Aramaic rather than Hebrew.
Opening verse
בִּשְׁנַת שָׁלוֹשׁ לְמַלְכוּת יְהוֹיָקִים מֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה בָּא נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר מֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶל יְרוּשָׁלִַם וַיָּצַר עָלֶיהָ׃
IN THE third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
